Speaker:

Welcome back to Talk Your Sass,

the podcast celebrating Black

2

:

women living their best life.

3

:

I'm your host, Jen Talks Tech, aka

Jennaba, your Chief Sass Officer,

4

:

self proclaimed queen of the

selfless service movement, and I'm

5

:

your best life connoisseur, your

life architect, and we're on a

6

:

journey to live our best life, okay?

7

:

We talk about Everything from living

intentionally, finding joy, failing,

8

:

pivoting, and healing, the good, the

bad, and the times when it's not so

9

:

cute, you know, before all the growth

moments when growing gets real.

10

:

Together, let's go on this journey,

living on purpose, in purpose,

11

:

talking our sass, and taking up space.

12

:

Now, this episode is super personal,

13

:

not to say any of my other

episodes are not, but

14

:

I just came back from Probably my

last conference of this year, my

15

:

last conference in a while, like I am

putting myself on a conference course.

16

:

knowledge, , detox.

17

:

I am not going to any conferences unless

I'm speaking, unless I'm on a stage,

18

:

unless I'm invited, flewed out, all that.

19

:

And it's not because I'm against

conferences or I think they're a scam.

20

:

I double down on self

investment, personal development.

21

:

I am a strong believer and advocate

for all things personal development.

22

:

I think that you should be having that.

23

:

a budget in your life for self development

and growth and bettering yourself.

24

:

I probably spent maybe 15 grand since

the end of the pandemic to now, probably

25

:

more, maybe like 20 on self investment

and personal development out of my own

26

:

pocket, not my job or any job or whatever.

27

:

But I've just gotten to this point

where I actually have to take action.

28

:

And do the things that I've learned

about, that I've paid for to learn, that

29

:

I've paid to get in rooms with people

who I wanted to learn from, , paid,

30

:

I paid to learn people's frameworks,

their proven process, their IP, and

31

:

it's time to do something with it.

32

:

It's time to use it and add on to what

I already have and develop my own IP.

33

:

So thank This episode, we're

really talking about moving

34

:

from , intentional action.

35

:

And it's so easy to get caught up on

the internet, on socials, collecting

36

:

endless podcasts, endless posts,

bookmarking them never to go back to them.

37

:

It happens to the best of us.

38

:

Look, it happens to me all the time.

39

:

You get caught up spending hours

taking it all in, but you're not using

40

:

it in any type of way or you're not

acting on it in any meaningful way.

41

:

So we just get caught in this cycle of

consuming content over and over again

42

:

and not taking any purposeful actions.

43

:

You know, being just information

gathering, scrolling, addicted

44

:

to consuming content and tips

and apply and never applying that

45

:

knowledge and turning it into action.

46

:

And I feel like the more and more we stay

in that space and in that cycle, we just

47

:

become consumers and never producers.

48

:

And I know personally, I want

to be on the production side.

49

:

I want to be the one.

50

:

Sharing and telling and educating

and influencing, not always

51

:

being influenced to and sold to.

52

:

So, yeah, I got to get my

life together before:

53

:

And this is why you're not going to

see me saying I went to any conferences

54

:

right now or in the near future.

55

:

tHis summer I knew

something was really wrong.

56

:

I needed to take action.

57

:

I was just...

58

:

Feeling like super stuck and I really

couldn't unpack why I felt like I had

59

:

all these plans information knowledge,

but I kept fumbling the bag on the action

60

:

part and so Keely miracle who is awesome.

61

:

If you guys aren't Instagram

go ahead and look her up

62

:

I went to her summer

group therapy session.

63

:

She is a Psychotherapist she

practiced nor new row Neuro intuitive

64

:

methods and hypotherapy practices.

65

:

She was having a session.

66

:

I knew at this point in my, mental

health, mental wellness journey, like

67

:

I'm, I'm obsessed about brain development,

cognitive behavior, like how your brain

68

:

actually works, what you can do to.

69

:

Have your brain in good health,

brain health practices, brain health

70

:

development, growing new brain cells.

71

:

Like I'm all about it.

72

:

I'm super into it.

73

:

, so when I saw her come across

my algo, I was tapped in.

74

:

I did a 60 minute session.

75

:

Um, she was having these

like summer sessions.

76

:

I did a 60 minute session.

77

:

She helped me unlock some.

78

:

Things she gave me a read y'all

some things that I didn't even know

79

:

that I still had or still needed

to do She basically told me while

80

:

This trait is very good It's also

deeply rooted in not enoughness or

81

:

me Subconsciously believing i'm not

enough Because I'm constantly seeking

82

:

more and more information, knowledge,

learning, and it's never enough.

83

:

Like, I'm, I'm all, like, I'm

pretty much addicted to it.

84

:

Like, I, I, I, I gotta do it.

85

:

Right?

86

:

And there's a little bit

of self sabotage in there.

87

:

Spillover from childhood.

88

:

I grew up in a very achievement

heavy household and culture where

89

:

everything is about achievement, and

everything is connected to, like,

90

:

what you do and not who you are.

91

:

As a person so i'm still getting over that

still healing working my way through that.

92

:

At some point though With this not

enoughness, although it's like a it's

93

:

a treat that I truly love about myself

at some point With it, with when, when

94

:

I say that, I mean, like, as it relates

to learning and information hoarding

95

:

and being a content snob, right?

96

:

At some point, it manifests

as being overwhelmed and

97

:

overloaded with information.

98

:

It becomes a cognitive burden.

99

:

And then that's why I was stuck.

100

:

So it's a gift and a curse

because my love of knowledge, my

101

:

ability to learn, consume, digest,

compartmentalize info very quickly.

102

:

, I can learn anything y'all.

103

:

Quick, it's figureoutable.

104

:

It's one of the top things

I love about myself.

105

:

So let me get into How I'm working

through this, getting through this

106

:

and trying to balance the information

overload and overwhelm and not enoughness

107

:

with still pursuit of knowledge

and just in time learning, right?

108

:

I am going to be doing

practicing conscious consumption

109

:

everybody loves content, videos,

podcasts, YouTube, whatever, right?

110

:

Great content that make our lives

better, make us live our best life.

111

:

But, you know, too much of it, it

could be an addiction, it's like,

112

:

it's too much down the rabbit hole.

113

:

Then you have too much information,

you don't know what to do with it.

114

:

Now, let me give y'all some

signs, y'all know I always got.

115

:

The tea, the facts, the data.

116

:

Let me give you some signs that you

might be down a rabbit hole or you're

117

:

in a trap of information overload.

118

:

You're in a cycle.

119

:

You frequently feel overwhelmed by all

of the emails, articles, videos, info,

120

:

bookmarks, saved stuff that you have.

121

:

Your list is endless.

122

:

You keep adding to those podcasts,

newsletters, emails, content,

123

:

but you don't go through them and

you don't do anything with them.

124

:

You accumulate half read books and then

you bookmark them to check out later,

125

:

you don't do it., Friends and family

complain that you're always glued to

126

:

the screen reading something, but then,

again, you never do nothing with it.

127

:

You're up all night binging content.

128

:

Even though you should go to bed.

129

:

You feel restless or anxious when you

have to take a break from consuming

130

:

content and you constantly check your

feeds and refresh to see if like new news.

131

:

New information, new

content is there all day.

132

:

So if that sounds familiar, it's

time to talk about some balance and

133

:

some boundaries on how you can start

practicing conscious consumption, right?

134

:

So here's some tips that I'm doing

that you could use to get started on

135

:

your conscious consumption journey.

136

:

And then you can intentionally

and purposefully consume content.

137

:

That aligns with your goals, , and

you can start actually taking action,

138

:

once you consume all this content.

139

:

So here we go, we're gonna have five tips.

140

:

Identify your learning goals and know

what you're consuming the content for.

141

:

Like, what is the purpose of

you consuming the content?

142

:

What are you trying to get better at?

143

:

What skill are you trying to develop?

144

:

, what are you going to do

as a result of learning X?

145

:

And once you identify that, then you can

focus all your reading and listening and

146

:

learning around those things specifically.

147

:

Number two, limit your browsing time.

148

:

Set up those timers, alerts on your phone.

149

:

And don't go over them.

150

:

, this is one of my favorites.

151

:

Number three, apply the Pareto principle.

152

:

That's the 80 20 rule.

153

:

So, focus on the 20 percent

content that you actually need.

154

:

Four, take notes on everything.

155

:

So those goals that you

identified in number one.

156

:

Um, anything that you're learning, take

notes, summarize, rinse, repeat, um, this

157

:

way you can have takeaways and insights

that apply to you personally and what

158

:

you want to do, what your goal for your

learning goal is, , your learning outcome,

159

:

and then you can refer back to it.

160

:

And then number five, give yourself

specific actions that you're going to

161

:

do after you learn whatever you learn

and consume whatever you consume so

162

:

that you can apply what you learn.

163

:

, the goal is to consume less

information overall, and we

164

:

do this by being intentional.

165

:

We do this by, and that,

that really gives us clarity.

166

:

and empowers us in our learning, right?

167

:

Because when you learn and then you

do, learning by doing is really like

168

:

the fastest way to learn anything.

169

:

So when you learn and do,

it's just a confidence boost.

170

:

For yourself.

171

:

It's like building reps and sets

with confidence with, being able to,

172

:

you know, you know, they say if you

can't teach it and explain it to a

173

:

kid, then you didn't really learn it.

174

:

You don't really know it.

175

:

So,

176

:

All of this will just help us in.

177

:

Reducing some of that information overload

178

:

and then a bonus.

179

:

I'm just going to tell y'all a little plan

that I put together to help me shift from

180

:

mindless consumption to again, intentional

learning and some tools that I'm using.

181

:

Of course, I have my

tech, which is Evernote.

182

:

, I use Otter to help record when

I'm listening to podcasts or talks,

183

:

it, it basically transcribes audio

so you can go back and listen to

184

:

that later, pull out your insights.

185

:

I use Evernote to take my notes.

186

:

so yeah, get you some tech, get you

some tools that you could, uh, use

187

:

for your learning and growth journey.

188

:

But let's go, let's run down

these, this, uh, learning plan.

189

:

So you really need to evaluate,

like I said, your current

190

:

social media and online courses.

191

:

Like, is this information

distracting you or helping you?

192

:

I know personally, a lot of

the information that I have

193

:

collected is a distraction.

194

:

So one thing I did

195

:

as soon as I came back from my last I went

in and audited all the emails that I get

196

:

and I unsubscribed from so many people's

emails because their content It's going to

197

:

distract me from doing what I need to do.

198

:

Um, it's going to be like, learn

this, take this, start doing this.

199

:

And it's like, nah, I haven't even

started doing that last thing.

200

:

Like I'm not about to start doing nothing.

201

:

So take an audit of the stuff that

you're consuming and understand

202

:

why are you consuming it?

203

:

And is it making you add on

more things for you to do?

204

:

, we, we talked about setting clear goals

from the content that you're consuming.

205

:

Like, are you trying to learn

digital marketing strategies

206

:

to grow your business?

207

:

Okay, well, then you can only

do like one thing at a time.

208

:

You can't say like you're about to

learn digital marketing strategies, but

209

:

then you're going to learn accounting

because you need to do your bookkeeping.

210

:

Like you can only focus on one thing.

211

:

So you got to block out the

noise of the other stuff.

212

:

And focus on that learning the digital

marketing strategies to grow your

213

:

business, if that's, you know, that

was just the example, but if that's

214

:

your thing, and you can reverse

engineer that, so what do you, what's

215

:

the steps that you need to take

really to learn the digital marketing

216

:

strategies the fastest, , and do that?

217

:

Another thing is like the communities,

that's also a distraction, like

218

:

I'm in 50 million communities and

I also just started going through

219

:

and removing myself from communities

that are not helping me to get to my

220

:

current goals, and my current plans.

221

:

The next thing is prioritizing.

222

:

And removing the noise, focus on a, focus

on like one or two actionable courses,

223

:

quality courses or conferences or whatever

it is that you're using, podcasts,

224

:

whatever you're using to learn and really

tap into the ones that are giving you

225

:

like actionable, tangible takeaways.

226

:

Cause a lot of this stuff

is just noise and talk.

227

:

And then lastly, apply

what you learned like.

228

:

If you're not applying

it, then what's the point?

229

:

Schedule time to actually

apply or do something which

230

:

you learned or take action.

231

:

Schedule time in your schedule to do that.

232

:

A couple other things after setting

your browsing limits, setting

233

:

your consumption limits, identify

like what times of day or what.

234

:

Things send you into a spiral or a rabbit

hole and like remove that, try something

235

:

else, try a different time of day, try,

you know, once you remove that content

236

:

or following those people or getting out

that community, like how easy it is for

237

:

you to get back on track, , you know,

identify that and be aware of that.

238

:

Remove some of these apps, um,

remove some of this stuff from your

239

:

browser that are distracting you.

240

:

So let me know if this helped you, uh,

and you're, if, if you're over consumer

241

:

tap it and let me know if, um, you're

going to implement some of these steps

242

:

and it's, and it's helped you let me know.

243

:

These are just some small tweaks and

little changes that are definitely

244

:

going to make a big impact.

245

:

So I'll let y'all know how it goes

to for me being more mindful of

246

:

my habits, taking more action.

247

:

, Being more of a producer than a consumer.

248

:

Tap in and call me out, y'all.

249

:

If y'all see me going to a conference,

please DM me or y'all see me saying,

250

:

I'm doing this course, please.

251

:

, cause I need accountability.

252

:

If you enjoyed this episode, subscribe.

253

:

Send me a DM.

254

:

In the meantime, keep taking

up space and talking more sass.
